Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra is a cultural hub of Assam. The aims of the institution include preservation, restoration, research, promotion and development of the cultural heritage of the diverse ethnic communities inhabiting Assam and North East. Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra serve as a centre of cultural activities in the field of dance, drama, music, fine-arts, literatures etc with a view to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Assam. It has a small museum inside the campus that showcases different costumes, crafts, fine art forms, music instruments, traditional utensils, fishing gears, etc.
The foundation stone of the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra was laid on the 2nd February'1988. Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, is a non-profit cultural organization in memory of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva and his contribution towards spiritual and cultural upliftment of Assam. It is situated in the locality of Panjabari of 6th Mile, about 10 km from the city centre of Guwahati, the gateway to the North East of India. It is governed by a body of executives, selected by the Assam Government's Cultural Department and is headed by a Director of the Assam Civil Service or Indian Administrative Service cadre.
