Uravu is a non profit trust established in 1986 at Thrikkaipetta in Wayanad district of Kerala, with the objective of empowering marginalized and economically weak social groups, especially women, traditional artisans and indigenous people. Its programmes fall in the bamboo sector where it provides skill training in bamboo processing, establishes micro enterprises, helps with the marketing of the products and also aids cultivation of bamboo. Uravu sees bamboo as a factor in ecological, food, shelter and livelihood security for the population mentioned earlier.
Uravu maintains a common facilities centre in Thrikkaipetta with bamboo processing machines where it provides skill training to women. More than 1000 women have undergone training at this centre. Micro enterprises for value addition of natural resources and development of products have been established by Uravu for bamboo and coconut shell craft, food products and dry flowers. It helps market the products of these units through various means like linking rural producers with corporate buyers, and other means like participating in exhibitions, e-marketing, franchisees and retail. It also maintains a bamboo nursery to ensure continuous supply of raw material and for eco restoration.
