Started in 1983 in city of Ahmedabad by Bipin Shah and Mallika Sarabhai, MAPIN publishing has brought Indian art and culture closer, not just to India but to the rest of the world. Through an impressive line up of publications it has looked to promote a finer understanding of Indian art and culture. A notable publication from its stable is the series of books on crafts of India which explores crafts of different Indian states, including those relating to contemporary folk art. The series covers the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh, and Tamil Nadu. Among these, the book 'Crafts of Gujarat' was MAPIN's first book published in 1985, of which today more than 300 titles have been brought out.
MAPIN today, also publishes literature under their nascent literary imprint, MapinLit, and produces books for children that seek to bring Indian narratives and art-forms closer to young readers. MAPIN has, over the years, received several awards for their outstanding contribution to documentation of art and culture of India.
