Folk Lore Museum

The Folk Lore Museum at Mysore, exhibits folk art and crafts from all over the state of Karnataka. Founded in 1968, the Museum is located at the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion in the University of Mysore on the Manasagangothri campus.

The museum not only showcases items but also elements of music, dance and drama. It has a spectacular collection of more than 6,500 unique folklore exhibits. The valuable collection includes props, costumes and accessories of the various forms of Yakshagana on display. Costumes of the folk dramatists of Andhra Pradesh, Kathakali dancers of Kerala, masks, puppets, and a large variety of folk musical instruments are showcased. The large repertoire of dolls on display bears the social, historical and religious influence of the time. Artifacts from the Soliga community, the traditional way of preparing ink 2 centuries ago in Dodderi village are displayed.
