Tarnetar No Melo: (Tarnetar Fair)
Gujarat's rich culture, traditions and handicrafts is showcased in its full glory in Tarnetar's fair. This three day fair begins from 4th day of 1st quarter of Bhadravo month (as per the Indian Calendar) and continues for three days. It is being organized in Village Tarnetar of Surendranagar District near a temple of the Lord Shiva known as Trinetreshwar Mahadev Temple and therefore the fair sometimes is also known as Trinetreshwar Mahadev Fair.
There are few interesting stories behind the origin of this popular 'lokmela-people's fair'. One of this trace backs to Mahabharat Era. It is said that the Swayamvar of Princess Draupadi was conducted here. According to the folklore, the Pandava Hero, Arjun, won Draupadi's hand by showing his skill at archery, making this fair still an ideal place for Tribal youth to choose their life partners. According to another story, in ancient times, the Indian Rishis, used to come this Lord Shiva temple on 5th of 1st quarter of Bhadarvo month to take a bath in the holy water of the river Ganges, which used to emerge because of their yogic powers. Still the water reservoir near the temple is believed to be containing holy water from the river Ganges and is considered 'Papanshu' (Destroyer of all the Sin).
At present the Village Local Government Body (Gram Panchayat) organizes this annual fair. People come in their traditional costumes and perform their folk dances. Various competitions such as best costumes, best folk performers. Kathiyawar Region of Gujarat has its own tradition blowing 'pavo' a traditional musical instrument. A competition of playing 'Pavo' is organized on this day. Similarly competitions on Most traditionally decorated bullock-cart, good cattle, etc are also being organized. Hudo is also performed by Hudo performing gropus. Another attraction of the Mela is Traditionally decorated umbrellas. All the bachelors sit under their respective colorfully embroidered umbrellas. Rural Olympics are also organized as part of Tarnetar Fair. Falk arts such as Puppet shows, magic shows, traditional gymnastic shows etc are also being organized.
More than 300 stalls sells food, refreshment, traditional craft items, cattle shows etc. The fair thus plays a crucial role in conserving and promoting intangible cultural heritage of Gujarat, especially handicraft, folk dances and folk music etc.
